The Epica Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Heater Carafe (that’s a mouthful, let’s just call it the Epica frother from now on) is designed to be usable with either hot or cold milk. Unlike handheld milk frothers, it comes with a heating element so that if you do want warm milk in the morning, then you don’t have to bother yourself with the extra step of putting your cup in the microwave in order to heat it up.
If you want your milk cold, on the other hand, like for shakes, smoothies, or even an iced latte, just set it to cold frothing. The machine will do the rest. That said, this is a relatively common feature, which the other automatic frothers we’ve reviewed also have.
The Epica is covered in stainless steel, a material proven to be a blessing in the kitchen, as, combined with the non-stick interior, it’s very easy to clean. Just put it through running water, and that should be it. Don’t submerge, the thing, though. It’s not dishwasher safe.
Now here’s one I haven’t seen before. The Epica frother claims to be “vacuum insulated”. I’m no scientist, so a quick trip to Wikipedia was necessary in order to figure this one out. According to their article, vacuum insulation works by eliminating convection as a method of heat transfer, because it relies on gases. Studies have even shown vacuum insulation to be superior to regular insulation.
With that in mind, what this means for you, if you decide to get the Epica, is that your warm froth will stay warm, and your cold froth will stay cold, for longer periods of time. That is, if for some reason, you decide to not pour that foam into your cappuccino or frappe immediately. I’d personally rather have my cuppa now rather than later, but let’s say you wanted to bring your foam to a picnic and didn’t bring a generator. Not exactly a perfect example, but you get the idea.
The carafe also detaches from the motor, which means that you don’t have to bother unplugging the frother from the socket to be able to serve your head of foam. That’s another plus for convenience.
The Epica includes measurement indicators, so you know how much you’ve got in there, which is very important: when just heating milk, it can go the whole 250 ml. When frothing it, however, it’s important to have it at 125 ml lest your milk overflow, leaving you with a messy kitchen.
Lastly, the Epica has a 2-year warranty. We don’t need to explain the importance of a warranty, do we? After all, a good warranty is one of the hallmarks of convenience, giving you the confidence to know that if something were to happen to your frother, it shouldn’t be hard to call up the manufacturer and get them to do something about it.
So What’s The Point?
If we’re going to compare automatic frothers, the Epica stands out for two things:
Number one, the price point. Even at list price, it’s cheaper than the others we’ve reviewed here, and has most of their features, so that’s a pretty good deal right there already.
Number two, that fancy vacuum insulation. Say you wanted to pass the brief Luddite period of Earth Hour with a nice warm cappuccino. Obviously, you can’t heat it up if you turn off the power for a whole hour, so it’s better to have your milk warm in advance, and this design feature will keep it warmer for longer. Again, another silly example, but you can see another way that can help you out.
If you’re going to get it, though, seriously, just get it for reason number one.
Perfectly Imperfect
Depending on your needs, it might not warm up your milk as much as you want it. The heating only goes as high as 60-62.8 degrees C (that’s 140-145 degrees, for you Fahrenheit people). Temperature, whether for coffee or tea, is a very finicky thing.
The ideal temperature for a cup of cappuccino is supposed to be around 60-70 degrees, and this sort of hits the low end of that. I guess you can try preheating your milk before putting it in if you want it to go higher.

Wisdom of the Masses
The Epica Frother has an average rank of 4.5 out of 5 stars on our recommended retail site, Amazon.com. 76% of customers gave it a 5 star rating, telling us that yes, this looks like a very good buy.
The customers who have tried it out have a lot to share about this product. More than one reviewer noted how quiet it is, such that you wouldn’t know the frother was running were it not for the LED light.
Another notes that it works well with non-dairy milk such as almond milk, soy milk, and the like. Someone also used it to make whipped cream, substituting cream for milk, then adding in some sugar and vanilla extract. Talk about a multi-purpose tool. Maybe I should try using the Epica to whip some cream for my frappe, even.
Several reviewers have pointed out that despite not being dishwasher safe, the Epica is in fact rather easy to clean. Just rinse with running water and clean with a soaped up sponge.
Of course not all the reviews were glowing. Some critical customers pointed out that even when following the instructions, the Epica has a tendency to overflow. So that’s something of a word of warning. Try filling it up below the minimum line if you want to froth up some milk.
Overall, despite these misgivings, the Epica is without a doubt a cost effective frother, definitely worth buying, especially given its price. I personally think it’s really all about knowing how to use it properly, because sometimes, even the instructions can be wrong.
