How to Use a Milk Frother

CappuccinoNot everybody wants to have to grab an espresso machine and learn the intricacies of using that professional steam wand to produce a coffee shop-class froth. Some folks just want a touch of instant gratification with their cappuccino (and save some dollars while they’re at it).

This issue is really two questions, if you think about it (and if you have options). So let’s start with the first one, which we tackled in detail in an earlier post about which milk frother is the best fit for you.

What Milk Frother Should I Get?

Hand-Operated Manual Milk Frother

If you’re really strapped for cash, then you could get a manual hand-cranked milk frother. We don’t recommend this simply because it’s relatively time consuming, and not to mention tiring.

If you do want to try that anyway (and trust me, you don’t), then this hand frother from our recommended seller Amazon.com should do the trick.

How Do I Use It?

It’s really straightforward.

  • Heat some milk. It should be warm, not boiling. That’ll ruin your foam.
  • Fill the carafe from 1/3 to 1/2.
  • Start working the hand pump, as fast as you can
  • You should get your froth within 30 to 60 seconds of sweating it out
  • Pour your frothed milk into your coffee
  • Enjoy your cappuccino (and the hard work you put into it)

Handheld Electric Milk Frother

This is the next step up from a hand cranked frother, and provides some of the best value for your money. It’s basically a battery-operated whisk on a wand. Simple, right?

If you decide that you want to try out an electric handheld frother, then we have just the thing for you. The Aerolatte Milk Frother is our recommended offering. You can find a review of it here. If the Aerolatte name is already familiar to you and you want to jump straight to buying one, then you can get it at our recommended seller, Amazon.com.

How Do I Use It?

Fortunately, the handheld electric frother takes a lot less effort to use than the manual one. In fact, you can tell by the difference in operation.

  • Heat up your milk. Again, warm rather than boiling.
  • Fill a frothing pitcher or your milk cup up from 1/3 to 1/2.
  • Switch on your handheld frother, and dip the whisk into the milk. Pump it up and down at a more relaxed pace, stirring occasionally.
  • Be sure to bring it up to the surface once in a while, to get some air in there.
  • In 15-30 seconds, you should have a nice thick head of froth, without having to tire yourself over it.
  • If using a frothing pitcher, pour your foam into a cup of coffee. If using a cup, pour some coffee into your foam.
  • Enjoy your easily-made milk latte, cappuccino, or whatever you happen to be making, as well as the fact that you didn’t have to sweat over making it.

Automatic Milk Frother

If you have some extra cash to spare, then this is probably the best option for you. The automatic milk frother is just as it says on the tin: pour in your milk, push a couple of buttons, and let it work its (scientifically derived) magic while you do something else. Now this comes with something of a little drawback, aside from lightening your wallet a bit more than if you got the first two. Namely, it might take a tad more effort to clean up than a hand cranked or a hand-electric frother.

That said, if you decide that the Automatic Frother is worth the extra expense, then by all means, go get one! Let us help you out by suggesting our primary automatic recommendation, the Epica Automatic Milk Frother and Carafe. It works just as well as any other Automatic frother out there, and is overall the cheapest. Here’s a review if you want to read about it in detail.

If you already know about the Epica and just wanna buy it, then click on the link below to go through to Amazon to get one for your kitchen.

How Do I Use It?

It’s called “automatic” for a reason. Let’s see how simple it is to use.

    • Fill your frother’s carafe with milk, from 1/3 to 1/2.
    • Switch it on. Most automatic frothers have the option to let you do a “cold froth”, i.e. whisking it without heating it. Usually this is achieved by holding down the start button until the light switches to blue. Choose whatever floats your boat.
    • Do something else while your automatic frother does all the hard work of heating and foaming your milk, in the span of under two minutes – usually around the area of 90 seconds or so.
      • Once it’s done, and some frothers come with a nice bell to tell you that, open up the carafe and pour your frothed milk into a cup of coffee.
    • Enjoy your cappuccino. While you’re at it, feel free to brag to mom that you made a nice thick head of foam with no hands!
