Secura Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Warmer Review

Welcome to our Secura milk frother review! On this page, I’m going to get into the nitty gritty about a rather large automatic milk frother. This one is for those of you who’ve always wanted to be able to froth up more milk than most automatic frothers are able to, and considered our other choices too small to get the job done.

This review will include a list of the features the product has, as well as what I believe the benefits are going to be. It will also include a quick bit about the pros and cons of the product, what I think your reason should be when you get it, and what your reason should be should you choose not to get it. We’ll round it off with what other customers have to say, before moving on to our final verdict, and just as importantly, showing you where you can get your own if you choose to buy it.

NOTE: If you’ve already decided that bigger is better, and want the 500ml Secura frother, but just want to know where to get it, then look no further than our recommended seller, Amazon.com. That the Secura Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Warmer includes a heating element isn’t anything new. In fact, it’s something we’ve grown to expect of automatic milk frothers, something that will eliminate the need to microwave your milk before foaming it up.

It goes up to 54.4 degrees Celsius (~130 in Fahrenheit), so if that’s not warm enough for you, you might want to nuke it a bit, but not too much. Would defeat the point of having a heater after all, right?

Now this is what I’m talking about. The Secura’s maximum capacity is 500ml, double that of pretty much every other bestselling automatic frother on the list as of this writing. Just to be clear, the maximum heating capacity is 500ml, while the maximum frothing capacity is 250ml. Again, that’s twice as much, considering most will only be able to foam up 125ml of milk before risking an overflow.

Those who have complained about the size of automatic frothers may now rejoice.

As with most automatic milk frothers, the Secura comes with maximum and minimum level indicators, saving you the trouble of having to eyeball how much milk you’re putting in. This is especially important when you’re frothing milk as opposed to simply heating it, because too much milk in the carafe, and you will end up with your nice thick head of foam overflowing and turning into a sad puddle of spilled milk.

The stainless steel exterior not only makes it look nice, but ensures a sturdy product that should last for quite a while. Like another automatic frother we reviewed previously, the Secura frother is vacuum insulated, meaning your milk will stay warmer (or cooler) for longer when compared to carafes with regular insulation.

The base is also detachable, so you don’t have to worry about unplugging the machine every time you want to pour froth (or warm milk) into a cup that’s far from wherever it happens to be plugged into.

The Secura is designed for the North American market, following the electrical standards of the countries in question. It goes at 120 V, so it plugs into a typical 110 socket just fine. 220’s are out of the question, though, unless you have a transformer for the job.

It comes with a 2-year warranty, meaning you shouldn’t worry too much about it breaking down within that time. Just be sure to read up on the warranty, though, to see what it entails.

So What’s The Point?

In all honesty, I’ve already pointed out the main selling point at the very start of this review. The Secura is big. And I don’t mean “oh it’s got an extra 15ml”. I mean big. With double the capacity of pretty much all the other automatic milk frothers on the bestseller list, this alone should be enough of a reason for you to get this particular device.

The vacuum insulation is also a pretty nice touch, and a necessary one in this case. A bigger frother means there’s more milk to go around. While this is handy for guests, it’s not every day that you’ll be entertaining visitors. Say you decided to foam up a cup of milk, all for yourself. Obviously, all that froth isn’t going to fit into one cup of Joe, so you’re going to have quite a bit left over. That’s where the insulation comes in. So that when you’ve poured out your second cuppa, the froth is still warm enough to go nicely with your second cup.

Perfectly Imperfect

It just doesn’t warm up the milk to my exacting standards. 54.4 degrees is definitely on the low end, even worse than another frother we reviewed. I said it once, and I’ll say it again. The ideal temperature for a cappuccino is 60-70 degrees C (140-158 F), and the heating element on the Secura doesn’t even hit the minimum.

If I have to microwave my milk before putting it in my automatic frother, that defeats the purpose of having an automatic frother. I might as well stick to a handheld frother and nuke my milk before foaming it up, if such is the case.

Wisdom of the Masses

The Secura frother has an average of 4.1 stars on our recommended retailer, Amazon.com. As of this writing, 62% of reviewers have given it 5 stars. This isn’t exactly an awesome score, but it’s the kind of score you’d expect from something that’s been on the market for this length of time.

One customer appreciates that it “works just as intended”, and how easy it is to clean, even coming with a brush in the packaging. Talk about convenience.

Another customer praised the customer service, which was very agreeable and gave a full refund when his order turned out to be defective. They even went the extra mile and shipped a replacement unit free of charge.

A third reviewer has been using it for over a year, twice a day, with no decrease in performance, although he has noted some of the non-stick coating at the bottom is starting to come off. Good thing there’s a two-year warranty, huh?

It does, however, leave some scalded milk over, so be ready to clean it out when that happens. The Secura is not dishwasher safe either. Some units have also broken down after less than a week of use.

Overall, this one is rather up in the air. Would I buy it? Sure, I’d buy it, though only for the fact that it’s got twice the capacity as every other automatic frother out there and comes with vacuum insulation. It comes for a reasonable price given its size, a list price of $130 at our recommended seller, Amazon.com. But knowing how good Amazon is, it’s probably likely that they’ll give you some pretty awesome sale prices, and I’ve seen some crazy deals there. As of this writing, the sale price is $54.95, a whopping 58% off. Amazon also gives quick and reliable delivery, ensuring its arrival at your doorstep in short order.
